My work inhabits the aesthetic realm of the sublime. Beauty and the grotesque, awe and terror, desire and repulsion are oscillating phenomena that frame our reality. In our culture, it is common to separate them into seemingly distinguishable categories. This idealistic framing is an attempt to obtain comfort, certainty and predictability through defining phenomena in an either-or fashion. I am interested in the gray area in which these polarities break down, blur and unnerve. I find these moments in the relationship between humans and our perceived "natural world."
Material is a primary vehicle through which I explore these gray areas. Physical material carries with it an embedded cultural history. It cannot escape content and meaning. It has its own properties and logic. I work directly with material to precipitate an organic / manufactured tension that walks the tightrope of the definable.
The sublime arises into our perception physically. In order to sense and make sense, one must swallow experience whole, with our rational mind and our intuitive, instinctual self.
